Often, we receive inquiries regarding fire extinguisher use. First, it is highly recommended that you always EVACUATE AND CALL 9-1-1 prior to attempting to extinguish a fire. We also recommend that you leave fire extinguishment to firefighters. We are trained professionals who receive countless hours of training, including fire extinguisher use. If you are determined to attempt extinguishment of a fire; (1) receive proper training on fire extinguisher types, usage, classes of fire and methods of extinguishment. (2) Always have a means of egress (an exit) at your back, in the event that you are unsuccessful. (3) Always stay upwind when using a fire extinguisher. (4) Remember fire spreads exponentially and very rapid. (5) The products of combustion/fire (smoke) affect the body rapidly and will lead to unconsciousness and death. (6) Be sure that your fire extinguisher is properly charged, stored and inspected annually.
Old fire extinguishers - Often, we receive inquiries regarding how to properly dispose of old fire extinguishers. We recommend that you contact an authorized fire extinguisher recharge service for the proper disposal of these as there are too many variables as to the age, type, chemicals used, etc. Some of the extinguishing agents are even considered hazardous materials. Therefore, the fire district/company cannot receive these.
